Sabah Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat, resigns suddenly from the state Cabinet on 13 April. There were rumours that it was due to differences between him and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Hj Aman. The main reason being CM's rejection of Chong's request to erect a giant Buddhist statute (Heaven Queen) in his home town Kudat. Other political observers here claimed that Chong is not supportive of Musa's intention of continuing the controversial development projects on the world reknown diving paradise Sipadan Isalnd.
Development can take other forms, not neccessarily involving massive construction works. Development does not mean chopping down century old trees, blasting the fargile island hills and polluting the sea with waste materials from the on-going construction works. Improving the maintenance of the rainforest on the island is development. Enhancing and preserving the corals in the island's surrounding sea is development. Maintaining a high quality in the sea water is also development.
Development for a place like Sipadan means improving its natural beauty and environment, not by adding man-made structures to it. Visitors from well developped countries have seen too many and much grander structures, they do not come all the way here to look at buildings on our islands! For the convenience of the divers, simple toilets and bathrooms are sufficient, no need to spend millions of ringgits. The Malaysian Rinngit has dropped value so much already meh?
